Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese comes from the Mosel's most famous sundial vineyard, in the estate's classic off-dry style.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr rises steeply above the Mosel at Wehlen, its blue Devonian slate holding the day's heat and its sundial marking the heart of the site. Joh. Jos. Prüm has been the reference producer here for generations, and Katharina Prüm now leads the estate. Spätlese is picked later than Kabinett and carries more must weight; at Prüm this shows less as extra sweetness than as extra flesh and power, the residual sugar balanced by the racy acidity and slate character that only the Mosel gives. The wines are fermented with ambient yeasts, bottled early, and are famously reserved in youth, needing time to open. Prüm regards the Spätlese as the most versatile category at her table, able to stand up to richer food than the Kabinett will, and 2021 is a year of unusual transparency and savoury depth across the range.

Approachable now, though it will gain depth for decades. Serve at 8 to 10°C with Thai or Sichuan food, smoked trout or a fruit-based dessert.
