Kenzie Tearz 2022

Kenzie Tearz is a white wine pressed from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Hawke's Bay.

Mangatahi was planted in 2006 on ancient river terraces, greywacke stone under volcanic ash topsoils, alluvial gravels and silt loams, and it sits inland between two mountain ranges, which gives it low rainfall, warm days and cold nights. The vineyard is farmed organically. Pinot Noir makes up the large majority of this wine and Chardonnay the rest. Both were handpicked and pressed as whole bunches straight to tank with full solids, so the juice ran clear of the skins before it took any colour. A wild ferment was followed by racking to old oak puncheons for natural malolactic, four months maturing cold, then bottling. No fining, no filtration, minimal sulphur.

Pale and quietly savoury, with white peach, citrus pith, a nutty lees edge and a dry, chalky close. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. Try it with a whole roasted fish, chicken and tarragon, a bowl of clams, or Gruyère and walnuts.
