Description
Lambert Crudo Shiraz is a Yarra Valley red, the first release drawn from the Martingale vineyard at Gruyere.
Chris Kennedy put Martingale in the ground in 2017, on a gently sloping north face 140 metres up, over the grey duplex soils of the lower Yarra, and farms it sustainably along lines Luke Lambert agrees with. The draw was the clone. Most Yarra Shiraz is PT23; Martingale is planted to Tahbilk, which Lambert worked with at Tibooburra and which gives small round berries and more mass in the glass. Handling stayed deliberately spare: destemmed fruit, a spontaneous ferment in an old 5,000-litre oak cask, then bottling with no fining and no filtration.
High-toned and layered, silky in weight, with dark fruit, cracked pepper and an earthy undertow. Spice and savoury detail have both stepped up. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Good with braised beef cheek, roast duck, a plate of salumi or grilled field mushrooms.
