Lambert Nebbiolo 2023

Lambert Nebbiolo is a perfumed, firmly structured Yarra Valley Nebbiolo grown on granitic sand.

Six clones share the six-acre block halfway up Denton's northwestern slope, and each does a job: Mat 3, on half the ground, contributes clout from small bunches and berries, while K6 supplies anise, bitter amaro and dried-flower lift. Granite bedrock under sandy topsoil leaves gun-flint and graphite through the wine alongside red fruit. A long, even finish to the 2023 harvest gave Luke Lambert unusually good hang time, and the result is riper and a darker shade of red than recent releases without losing poise. He suggests a decanter if you are opening it young.

Brooding and perfumed, with dried red flowers, anise, sour cherry and a steely mineral line carrying a long finish. There is muscle here, held in shape. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees after an hour in a decanter. Match it with osso buco, roast duck, porcini risotto or hard alpine cheese.
