Description
Lambert Syrah is a cool-climate Yarra Valley Syrah from the high-grown Tibooburra vineyard.
No Syrah was made at either level in 2020, because Luke and Rosalind Lambert judged the fruit short of the mark and would not push it. The 2021 came off Tibooburra, a high site whose clonal material yields something deeper and more structured than the Yarra usually gives, which is what drew Lambert there in the first place. Whole bunches sat at sixty per cent, with some crushed bunches, and there was no carbonic maceration at all, a technique he has been winding back for years in favour of more crushed berries, shorter macerations and more punch-downs. Wild ferment, then a decade-old 5,000-litre foudre.
Brambly blue and red fruit alongside cured meat, graphite tannin and a mineral undertow. Velvety in the mouth, energetic, complex. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits a rare sirloin, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, duck ragù or a mushroom and thyme tart.
