Lambert Syrah 2022

Lambert Syrah is a Yarra Valley Syrah from the west-facing top of the Denton vineyard.

The west side of the hill takes the afternoon sun, and near the crest the topsoil is almost gone, so yields fall well below those of the Crudo vines on the lower slope. Luke Lambert rates learning how to get the best out of a bunch as the most useful skill of his career, and the 2022 carried eighty per cent whole bunches. Ferments run fast here, ten to twelve days, with Rosalind and their daughter Olive working the cap twice a day. The wine was pressed to tank to settle naturally, then racked to large old foudre.

Perfumed with berry fruit, smoky graphite and savoury spice, then deep and richly textured, with taut acidity and assertive tannin behind it. Very long. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Try it with roast lamb, beef short rib, pepper-crusted venison or a slab of aged cheddar.
