Description
Lambert Syrah is a whole-bunch Yarra Valley Syrah grown on thin granitic soil.
Picking came four weeks later in 2023 than the year before, which suits Luke Lambert; he prefers the cool, late seasons for the depth and the brooding spice they bring. The vines sit on the sunnier western side of Denton, up where soil runs out and crops are small. Eighty per cent of the fruit went in as whole bunches, and in the first critical days Rosalind foot stomps the ferment three times a day so each berry is popped gently and the juice meets skins and stalks quickly. Fast ferment, prompt pressing, then 5,000-litre foudre.
Composed and vivid, with bright perfume, ground pepper and dark berries running through earthy, stony territory. Slick and very long. Serve at 16 degrees. Good with grilled lamb cutlets, duck breast, a beef and olive stew or eggplant parmigiana.
