Laughing Jack Greenock Shiraz 2019

Laughing Jack Greenock Shiraz is a single-parcel Barossa Shiraz grown on ironstone.

Ironstone was the reason the East Block went in at all: after nearly 150 years of Kalleske grazing and cropping, Shawn Kalleske read the soil at Greenock as Shiraz country and planted in 1999. The parcel is own-rooted and carries several clones, one of them the original selection from the 1890 Greenock property. For 2019 the fruit was destemmed and the berries crushed into small three-tonne open-top fermenters, hand plunged twice daily across twenty days, then rested twenty months in a mix of new and seasoned French and American oak. The style is generous without being heavy-handed.

Dark plum, blackberry and a ferrous, earthy Greenock signature, with cedar and vanilla behind and tannin that still has some to give. Cellar it, or decant and pour with a good steak. Serve at 17 degrees; also good with lamb backstrap or a mushroom pie.
