Laughing Jack Jack's Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2020

Laughing Jack Jack's Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre is an old-vine Barossa blend from the Moppa Hill and Greenock vineyards.

Getting hold of Shawn Kalleske outside daylight hours is difficult, because daylight hours are vineyard hours, and by 2020 he had twenty-four vintages at the estate behind him. The Moppa Hill site went in during 1962, ancient sandy topsoil with old vines anchored deep in reddish-orange clay; Greenock runs to deep red earth. Both are own-rooted, both cropped around half a tonne to the acre that year, and both are farmed on organic principles. The blend came in at 57 per cent Grenache, 32 Shiraz and 11 dry-grown Moppa Mourvèdre, each handpicked, destemmed and fermented as whole berries, with free-run and press components aged apart for sixteen months in seasoned French puncheons.

Scented with dark fruit, sweet spice and a floral lift, then full-throated but balanced, plummy and generous with fine tannin underneath. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Match it with barbecued lamb, a beef and red wine pie, roast pumpkin and haloumi, or charcuterie.
