Description
Laughing Jack Jack's Semillon is a wild-fermented Barossa white from old vines at Greenock.
Barossa Semillon deserves more attention than it gets, and this is a good argument for it: an old, low-cropping vineyard north of Greenock township planted in the 1960s to clone 143, which ripens early and gives only a handful of tiny bunches per vine. Grapes were hand-picked and pressed as whole bunches into stainless steel and a single barrel for fermentation, then kept on post-ferment lees a further six months, which is where the texture and the freshness come from. 2017 was a cool growing season, and it shows in the line of acid running through the middle.
Pink grapefruit, candle wax and fresh-cut hay, textural but lively, closing salty and moreish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. Try it with fish and chips, chicken sandwiches, a plate of oysters or pan-fried whiting with lemon.
