Laughing Jack Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz 2018

Laughing Jack Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz is a single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz from the Moppa sub-region.

The six acres behind this wine were replanted in 2001; the original 1912 vineyard was pulled out in the mid-1980s under South Australia's vine-pull scheme, one of the more regrettable pieces of agricultural policy in the state's history. Moppa sits about two kilometres from Greenock as the crow flies, on sandier ground, and the difference is legible: more perfume, finer tannin, less brawn. Tasting this beside the Greenock Shiraz of the same year is one of the better short lessons in Barossa sub-regionality available for the price of two bottles.

Medium-deep ruby, with red and black fruit, a twist of liquorice and a floral top note. Ripe and well balanced, the tannin persistent but silky. Drink now or hold seven to ten years. Serve at 17 degrees with roast lamb, duck or beef ribs.
