Laughing Jack Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz 2019

Laughing Jack Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz is a single-block Barossa Shiraz from a low-yielding vintage.

Sandier soil is what separates Moppa from Greenock two kilometres away, and it shows up as perfume and finer tannin in the glass. The six-acre block was replanted in 2001 after the original 1912 vines were removed in the mid-1980s under the state's vine-pull scheme. The 2019 was picked on 22 February and fully destemmed, the whole berries sent to small open-top fermenters and hand plunged three times a day. After eighteen days on skins it went to the basket press, then twenty months in French hogsheads, a quarter of them new, and American oak. Crops were very small, which bodes well for the cellar.

Red and dark berries, violet and liquorice, with the concentration a small crop brings and tannin that is firm but fine-grained. It will reward patience. Serve at 17 degrees, decanted. Good with dry-aged beef, lamb shoulder or a mature cheddar.
