Laughing Jack Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz 2020

Laughing Jack Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz is a single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz grown on sand.

Six acres in the Moppa sub-region, replanted in 2001 on the footprint of a 1912 vineyard that came out in the mid-1980s under the state's vine-pull scheme. Greenock is barely two kilometres away and makes a denser, more ferrous wine; the sandier ground here tends towards perfume and finer tannin, which is why Shawn Kalleske bottles it separately. The winemaking follows the estate pattern: hand-picked fruit, destemming, small open-top fermenters worked by hand, basket pressing, and maturation in French and American hogsheads with a modest new-oak component.

Perfumed and medium to full bodied, with dark cherry, plum and a savoury, spicy edge over supple tannin. Serve at 17 degrees. Match it with roast lamb, a beef and mushroom pie, grilled sausages or a plate of hard cheese.
