Laughing Jack The Limited Two Shiraz 2018

Laughing Jack The Limited Two Shiraz is a rare two-barrel Barossa Shiraz, made only in the best years.

Across twenty-two years at the estate, Shawn Kalleske has bottled this four times. The fruit comes from a dry-grown three-acre parcel within Greenock's East Hill Block, planted in 1999 at 335 metres on ironstone-rich calcareous soil over deep red clay. Picking is by hand, and the 2018 was fully destemmed and crushed, then hand plunged three times a day and drained to the basket press after sixteen days on skins. Twenty months in barrel followed, half of it tight-grained new French oak and the rest second use. Around 800 bottles exist.

Reverberating depth and power, held under control: ripe fruit, fine sinewy structure and a great deal of detail. Built to age for a long time. Decant it and serve at 18 degrees, with dry-aged beef, slow-roasted lamb or a plate of hard, salty cheese.
