Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso Cabernet Franc 2020

Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso is a varietal Cabernet Franc from Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast.

Eugenio Campolmi set up the estate in the early 1980s, and Cinzia Merli runs it today. When the coast was all about Bordeaux blends, they made single-variety wines, and this is the one that made the case. It started with some Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend but has been all Cabernet Franc since 2001, released as Toscana IGT and not under the Bolgheri denomination. Vineyards on clay and sand a few kilometres from the sea are farmed sustainably for low yields; fermentation in steel and cement with a long maceration is followed by French oak, mostly barriques and tonneaux, then time in bottle.

Concentrated for its medium body, with red fruit, tobacco leaf, a graphite edge and firm tannins that never feel heavy. Decant an hour ahead and serve at 16–18°C with roast veal, game birds or aged pecorino.
