Lethbridge Block 4 Pinot Noir 2018

Lethbridge Block 4 Pinot Noir is a single-block Moorabool Valley Pinot Noir raised in custom-made oak.

Block 4 occupies the northwest corner of the home vineyard, on black clay, basalt and limestone, planted in 1998 mostly to MV6 with a little 115. A cool, wet start to 2018 caused some worry before November dried and warmed, and Ray Nadeson has called the rest of that season one of the most pleasurable he has seen in decades. Fruit was hand-picked, fermented spontaneously in open-top vessels with half whole bunches, and matured in barrels, half of them new. Nadeson's oak is built by a single French cooper to his specification: light toast, tight grain, chosen to help polymerise tannin. His wines never taste oaky.

Bold and richly textured, with deep red fruit, exotic spice and savoury detail from well-judged wood. Bottle age has knitted it together. Serve at 15 degrees. Match it with roast duck, mushroom risotto, quail or a soft washed-rind cheese.
