Lethbridge Chardonnay 2022

Lethbridge Chardonnay is a multi-site Chardonnay drawn from cool, rocky vineyards in Geelong and Henty.

Four sites feed the 2022. Hat Rock, planted in 1996 on the Bellarine between Drysdale and Portarlington, sits on volcanic clay and loam over limestone with Corio Bay moderating the heat. Suma, across the peninsula above Swan Bay, has thin red clay over limestone and contributes salt and chalk. The Henty portion comes off Jack and Lois Doeven's schist at Drumborg. Closing the set is the home block, planted in 1996 at 270 metres on thin black clay above bluestone, honeycomb basalt and limestone, the coolest ground in the Moorabool Valley. Yields average 25 hectolitres per hectare. Parcels stay separate: pressed as whole bunches, wild-fermented in new oak, full malolactic, eleven months in 30 per cent new wood.

Stone fruit and citrus over wet stone, with oak spice folded in and a long, mouth-watering finish. Concentrated but taut, and it will hold for years. Serve at 12 degrees. Good with roast chicken, crayfish, veal cutlets or a hard washed-rind cheese.
