Lethbridge Gamay 2022

Lethbridge Gamay is an estate-grown Gamay from young vines in the Moorabool Valley.

Thirty years in the district taught Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis that warm vintages were becoming the norm, so in 2016 they planted Gamay, which copes with heat better than Pinot, among the Chardonnay, Pinot and Shiraz already in the ground. The vines went into the lower part of the property towards Bruce Creek, a warmer and more sheltered spot where sandy loam over limestone suits the variety. This is only the second one they have made. The fruit is hand-picked and ferments with partial carbonic maceration, layering crushed and whole-bunch fruit, then ages in mature 500-litre puncheons.

Light on its feet and dry, with raspberry, red cherry and a peppery snap, the tannin barely there. It takes a chill well. Serve at 13 to 14 degrees. Match it with charcuterie, roast chicken, a ham sandwich or grilled sardines.
