Description
Lethbridge Gamay is a carbonic-influenced Gamay grown beside Bruce Creek in Geelong.
The technique behind it is what Ray Nadeson calls his black forest cake ferment: layers of crushed and whole-bunch fruit stacked in the vessel so carbonic maceration runs in part of it and a conventional ferment in the rest. The vines were planted in 2016 on the warmer, sheltered lower section of the Moorabool Valley property, where sandy loam sits over limestone, a decision made after three decades of watching the seasons here get hotter. Gamay handles that better than Pinot Noir. This is the third release, and maturation took place in mature 500-litre puncheons.
Crunchy and fragrant: red cherry, cranberry, white pepper and a sappy, dry finish with next to no tannin weight. Serve it cool, 13 degrees. Good with a charcuterie board, roast pork, grilled tuna or a mushroom tart.
