Lethbridge Le Droit 2017

Lethbridge Le Droit is a Merlot-based Geelong red made in the image of right-bank Bordeaux.

The bistro reds come in a pair: La Gauche, led by Cabernet Sauvignon, and this one, the rounder and richer of the two. Fruit comes from the Moorabool Valley home vineyard and a long-established site three kilometres off, lower down on the river flats. The 2017 splits roughly evenly between Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a little Cabernet Sauvignon, each parcel destemmed and fermented on its own before eighteen months in fine-grained French oak, new and one year old. Ray Nadeson sums it up as a voluptuous palate of dark berry, liquorice and spice, and he is not overselling it.

Plush and dark, with plum, black cherry, liquorice and spice over supple tannin, held together by cool-climate acid. Drinking well now. Serve at 17 degrees. Match it with roast beef, duck confit, a mushroom and bacon pie or a washed-rind cheese.
