Lethbridge Mietta Pinot Noir 2019

Lethbridge Mietta Pinot Noir is the estate's flagship Pinot Noir, from the property's oldest block.

The Top Block on the eastern side of the property holds the first vines planted when replanting began in the mid-1990s, 'a block planted by PhDs', as Ray Nadeson puts it, a reference to the friends and colleagues who helped in the early days. It is low-yielding, entirely MV6, on black clay, basalt and limestone. 2019 tested his nerve: a hot, quick start had many growers stripping fruit in a hurry, and he waited for the weather to settle so ripening could return to a long, even pattern. Hand-picked, spontaneously fermented with 80 per cent whole bunches, eleven months in new wood, three years in bottle. Named for one of his and Maree Collis's daughters.

Dark cherry and forest floor with whole-bunch spice and a long, structured finish. There is power here and no shortage of perfume. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Match it with roast duck, veal, mushroom risotto or a mature washed-rind cheese.
