Lethbridge Pinot Gris 2023

Lethbridge Pinot Gris is a textural, barrel-fermented Pinot Gris from Henty and Geelong.

Three vineyards feed the 2023: two in Henty and one in Geelong. Ray Nadeson rates Henty highly and thinks it badly underappreciated, valuing the cool, windy, high-elevation sites. Jack and Lois Doeven's schist vineyard at Drumborg crops very low, while the Vaughan vineyard sits on clay and limestone. Hillside Haven, three hectares planted in 1990 at 230 metres on the granitic loam of Mount Anakie, supplies the Geelong portion. Chasing flavour and texture, Nadeson picks over several passes, ferments in small batches in new wood with some parcels given up to 48 hours on skins, then matures the wine on fine lees in foudre.

Complex and detailed, with a fleshy core, pear and baked apple, well-knit acidity and a good deal of savoury nuance. There is far more here than the variety usually manages. Serve at 11 degrees. Try it with roast pork, chicken with tarragon, or a soft washed-rind cheese.
