Lethbridge Que Syrah Syrah 2022

Lethbridge Que Syrah Syrah is a cool-climate Syrah from the Malakoff vineyard in the Pyrenees.

Malakoff, owned and run by Cameron and Robert John near Landsborough, has fed some of Victoria's best Shiraz for years. Planted in 1997 on a moderate, sheltered northeast slope at 300 metres, its red ferrous clay is littered with ironstone and quartz; most of the 23 hectares carries three Shiraz clones, PT23, BVRC30 and Best's Old Block, with Nebbiolo and a little Viognier making up the rest. Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis take all the fruit from their blocks and share the farming decisions, and he points to a common inky, spicy marker across all of them. The 2022 was destemmed, fermented spontaneously in a 3,000-litre cuve for twenty days, then returned to the same vessel for ten months.

Refined and delicate for the variety, with black pepper, dark berry and an inky, iron-tinged core over fine tannin. The cool season kept it lithe. Serve at 16 degrees. Match it with lamb, duck with olives, a beef and thyme stew or grilled mushrooms.
