Lethbridge Riesling 2023

Lethbridge Riesling is an off-dry Riesling from a limestone-rich vineyard at Mount Gambier.

Almost all the 2023 came from a mature site just outside the Mount Gambier township, planted in the early 1990s on limestone-rich ground and cropping low at three tonnes to the acre. Ferments were spontaneous and run in small batches, a tenth of the volume went through malolactic conversion, and bottling was done at 10.8 grams per litre of residual sugar. Getting sugar right in Riesling is difficult, and Ray Nadeson is a committed advocate of leaving a little in every one of his, essential for the texture of the wine as he puts it. He is good at it.

Lime leaf and white flowers on the nose, then fleshy citrus weight, long racy lines and a lip-smacking, moreish finish. It tastes dry despite the sugar. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees. Good with Vietnamese salads, chilli prawns, pork belly or a spicy curry.
