Lethbridge Shiraz 2022

Lethbridge Shiraz is a cool-climate Moorabool Valley Shiraz from a single block of St Peters clone.

Another long, cool season in 2022 gave the fruit plenty of hangtime, which built concentration while leaving intact the shimmering acid line this cellar is known for. The source is Block 6 in the home vineyard, the coolest ground in the region at 270 metres, planted in 1998 to the St Peters clone, a selection that traces back to Seppelt's 1863 St Peters vineyard at Great Western. Thin black clay lies above bluestone, honeycomb basalt and limestone. Hand-picked fruit fermented spontaneously in small open-top vessels with 30 per cent bunches, soaked on skins for more than a month, then spent eleven months in 30 per cent new French oak.

Midweight and savoury, with pepper, dark plum, dried herb and a stony finish. Structure without bulk, and enough acid to keep it lively. Serve at 16 degrees. Good with roast lamb, beef ragù, duck breast or a mushroom and lentil braise.
