Little Reddie Leanganook Chardonnay 2024

Little Reddie Leanganook Chardonnay is a full-bodied Chardonnay from the western slopes of Mount Alexander in Bendigo.

Leanganook is the older name for Mount Alexander, and the Dash Farms vineyard climbs its western face to 475 metres, rows running north to south over quartz and feldspar sand, which is decomposed granite in plain terms, planted to I clones in the late 1990s. Fruit came in over many passes as ripeness shifted down the hill, each parcel handled on its own terms. The bulk of the wine is one rolling ferment in stainless steel at cool temperatures, stirred and then moved to old barrels once dry, with under 10 per cent fermented in younger French oak. Pat Underwood picked his favourite barrels in late summer and bottled in-house.

Expect white peach and grapefruit pith over a long mineral line, with oak sitting well behind the fruit. There is flesh here, but the finish stays dry and taut. Serve at 12 degrees with grilled flathead, chicken pie or a wedge of comte.
