Luciano Sandrone Barbera d'Alba 2022

Luciano Sandrone Barbera d'Alba is drawn from four high, exposed sites and raised in untoasted tonneaux made in Burgundy.

Barbera d'Alba covers the Langhe hills around Alba and gives a red naturally high in acidity and comparatively low in tannin, which makes site selection and oak handling the two decisions that matter most. Sandrone draws this wine from four vineyards: Cascina Pe Mol in Monforte d'Alba, Ravera and Rocche di San Nicola in Novello, and Albarella in Barolo. At 350 to 450 metres these are among the region's highest and most exposed sites, and they bring notable freshness and vibrancy. To balance the structure and acidity, the wine matures in 500-litre tonneaux, 40 per cent of them new. The estate has untoasted barrels made specially in Burgundy for this cuvée so that the wood impact stays discreet; some oak shows on the nose when the wine is young, and integrates seamlessly with time. The result is fleshy yet fluid, with white pepper and spice from the Monforte vines.

Drink over the next six to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with tajarin al ragù, roast pork or a plate of salumi.
