Description
Sandrone Barolo Aleste is the estate's flagship single-vineyard Barolo, made entirely from the Cannubi Boschis cru.
Cannubi is the most celebrated hill in the commune of Barolo, and Boschis is the subzone at its northern end, directly opposite the Sandrone cellars. Luciano Sandrone farms 1.9 hectares of forty-year-old vines here on a south to south-east facing slope that forms a small amphitheatre, or conca, holding warmth through the early morning. The soils are marine deposits of calcareous clay with a sand fraction, which drains freely. Alessandro Masnaghetti's survey of the Barolo crus notes that the wines of this section carry good body, considerable elegance and more polished tannins than the rest of the hill. Renamed Aleste in recent vintages after Sandrone's grandchildren, the wine remains entirely Cannubi Boschis fruit. Vinification follows the same path as Le Vigne, with wild yeast fermentation and long ageing in mostly used 500-litre French oak casks, but with a slightly longer time on skins.
Worth five to ten years in the cellar, and best decanted if opened early. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, wild mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
