Description
Massolino Barbera d'Alba is a Serralunga-based Barbera raised entirely in cement, with no oak at all.
Barbera d'Alba covers the Langhe hills around Alba, where Barbera is generally planted on the sites not given over to Nebbiolo; from good vineyards it gives a red with deep colour, modest tannin and bright acidity. Massolino is a Serralunga d'Alba estate best known for its Barolo, and its two hectares of Barbera sit in a limestone-rich vineyard in the commune, now complemented by fruit from Monforte d'Alba. The 2021 fermented for ten to twelve days in cement tanks and was then held in the same vessels for a short period before bottling, so there is no wood influence. The approach suits the variety, keeping the fruit direct and the acidity lively, while the limestone component of the Serralunga soils lends a fine, powdery tannin that Barbera does not always show. The wine is sealed under screwcap.
Drink over the next five years, with agnolotti, salumi or a simple braise. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
