Description
Massolino Barolo, first produced in 1911, is the family's village blend from seven hectares of prime Serralunga vineyard.
Serralunga d'Alba is the most austere and long-lived of the Barolo communes, its steep ridge of calcareous marl producing wines built on tannin and acidity rather than early charm. This is a village blend in the traditional sense, drawn from parcels dotted around the town: Briccolina, Collareto, Broglio and Le Turne are the most important, with Le Turne bordering Margheria and Collareto lying next to Vigna Rionda. A little fruit from the family's Parussi cru in Castiglione Falletto and some declassified Vigna Rionda also go into the blend, and vine age ranges from roughly ten to fifty-five years. The grapes spend ten to twelve days on skins, with fermentation split between large wooden cask and concrete, and the wine then matures for thirty months in a range of 40- to 100-hectolitre French, Austrian and Slavonian oak casks.
Decant if opening young, or hold another five years or more. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, mushroom pasta or a mature hard cheese.
