Description
Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo is a three-site Nebbiolo from a Serralunga d'Alba estate better known for its Barolo.
The Langhe denomination is where Piedmontese producers bottle Nebbiolo grown outside, or declassified from, the Barolo and Barbaresco boundaries. Early releases of this wine came solely from Massolino's younger vines in Serralunga d'Alba, in effect a declassified Barolo. Two further parcels now contribute. Cascina I Maschi, at Monforte d'Alba, lies at altitude right on the edge of the Barolo zone on chalk-rich soils, and the estate credits that cool site with the wine's perfume and ripe acidity; a parcel at Alba, on lighter sandy clay, brings concentration and weight. The blend runs roughly a third from each. Ageing follows the house pattern for Nebbiolo, in large Slavonian oak casks, though the Langhe spends fifteen months in wood against twenty-four or more for the Barolo wines, which is much of why it is the more approachable bottle.
Drinkable on release and good for six to eight years; serve at 17°C with braised beef, mushroom risotto or a hard alpine cheese.
