MDI Sangiovese 2022

MDI Sangiovese is a savoury Tuscan-variety red grown on Denis Pasut's vineyard in Mildura.

Denis Pasut's well-established Mildura plantings supply all the fruit here. The 2022 season ran cool and long and delivered flavourful, complex grapes in clean condition, which is the best hand Kevin McCarthy can be dealt. Grapes were destemmed and fermented in tank, then matured sixteen months in barrel. Through that time the wine was tasted and topped regularly to keep it fresh, and racked often so a measured amount of oxygen could build aromatic complexity, an old-school approach that suits a variety which turns dull if it is cosseted.

Sour cherry, tomato leaf and cured meat, with brisk acid and a dry chalky tannin. It wants food, and soon. Serve at 16 degrees with pasta and tomato, a roast chicken, or salumi and olives.
