MDI Sangiovese 2023

MDI Sangiovese is a dry, food-friendly red from mature Sangiovese vines in the Murray Darling.

Low yields marked 2023 at the Pasut vineyard in Mildura, following a cool and drawn-out season that brought the fruit in flavourful and pristine. Small crops concentrate things, and that shows in the middle of this wine. Destemming and a tank ferment kept the handling simple, and the wine then spent sixteen months in seasoned barrels, so no new oak sits on top of the fruit. Regular tasting and topping maintained freshness, while frequent racking let a little oxygen through to build aromatic complexity. Sangiovese repays that kind of attention.

Red cherry and dried herbs over a firm, mineral-edged palate, with tannin that dries the finish the way Sangiovese should. Sixteen degrees. Put it next to a bowl of ragu, grilled lamb cutlets, or a slab of parmesan.
