MDI Vino Del Borgo 2023

MDI Vino Del Borgo is an unfussy white blend, mostly Ansonica and Ribolla Gialla, from Mildura and Swan Hill.

The name means village wine, and the model is the anonymous carafe white poured in cucinas and trattorias across Italy, the sort you drink without interrogating. Fruit is handpicked across Mildura and Swan Hill, left on skins a while and given a bit longer in barrel than a fresh white would get. The blend leans on Ansonica and Ribolla Gialla this year, though that is no promise for next. Kevin McCarthy's broader point is that the Murray River region grows an unusual spread of varieties side by side, with room to experiment that few Australian regions can match.

Golden, gently textural and dry, with orchard fruit, dried herbs and a savoury finish. No fireworks, and none intended. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees with roast chicken, a frittata, or bread and cheese and whatever is in the fridge.
