Meadowbank Blanc de Blancs 2017

Meadowbank Blanc de Blancs is a single-vineyard Chardonnay sparkling from the Derwent Valley in Tasmania.

Second release, and the site has not moved: the same south-facing parcel in Far Horse Vineyard, planted to clone I10V1, sitting in a cooler mesoclimate than the Chardonnay rows nearby. Season matters more in sparkling than in most wines, and 2017 came in cooler than 2016, long and moderate, turning out Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of unusual purity. Fruit was hand-picked and pressed as whole clusters with only the first two-thirds of the juice taken for fermentation, which ran three months in old barriques; Peter Dredge also seasoned one new barrel with sparkling base. Five years on lees, then four grams per litre of dosage.

Citrus, white flowers and a fine bready thread, with acidity that arrives with real clarity and a long saline close. Pour it at 8 degrees as an aperitif, or bring it to the table with scallops, chicken and tarragon, or a soft-rind cheese.
