Meadowbank Blanc de Blancs 2019

Meadowbank Blanc de Blancs is a fine, briny Chardonnay sparkling from Tasmania's Derwent Valley.

Fourth release, from the same block that has supplied every one before it: south-facing, clone I10V1, in the Far Horse Vineyard, deliberately cooler than the Chardonnay planted nearby. A dry, moderate year on the Derwent delivered intensely flavoured fruit with glistening acidity. Bunches were pressed whole and only the first two-thirds of the juice drawn off for a three-month ferment in old barrels, with one new barrel seasoned by the base wine. The wine then spent five years on lees before disgorgement in September 2024 with three grams per litre of dosage. Peter Dredge learned this craft alongside Brian Croser and Ed Carr.

Refined and quietly intense, with citrus acidity cutting through creamy brioche and silky stone fruit, then a tight briny finish of real length. Eight degrees, in a proper glass. Serve with oysters, cured kingfish, or a plate of gougeres.
