Meadowbank Blanc de Noirs 2020

Meadowbank Blanc de Noirs is a zero-dosage Tasmanian sparkling made from Pinot Noir.

No dosage at all in this release, which takes some nerve and rather more fruit quality. The Pinot grows on a north-east-facing block in Far Horse Vineyard, a gentle five-degree slope of sandy soil over coffee rock, and was vinified in stainless steel with a hard cut at the press: 300 litres per tonne, against a norm of 500 to 550. Three years on lees gave the wine what a sugar addition would otherwise have to supply. Because Pinot Noir takes on lees character faster than Chardonnay, Peter Dredge releases the Blanc de Noirs from more recent vintages than the Blanc de Blancs.

Bone dry and mineral, with white nectarine, citrus rind and a long saline, almost austere finish. It rewards a little warmth in the glass. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees with oysters, raw fish, or a simple omelette.
