Meadowbank Blanc de Noirs 2021

Meadowbank Blanc de Noirs is a vinous, generous Pinot Noir sparkling from the Derwent Valley.

Fourth release, from a vineyard that also supplies House of Arras, which is worth knowing because it tells you how the fruit is regarded. The block faces north-east on a rolling five-degree slope of sandy soils over coffee rock, and 2021 was a moderate-to-cool season that ripened slowly and evenly. Yields were down and quality was up. Vinification happened in stainless steel with only 300 litres of juice taken per tonne, little more than half the usual allowance, and three years on lees followed, with disgorgement in late 2024 at three grams per litre. Peter Dredge trained alongside Brian Croser and Ed Carr, and it shows.

Decadent for a sparkling wine, with strawberry and forest fruit, a generous mouthfeel and savoury complexity behind the fine acid line. Long finish. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees with roast quail, a mushroom risotto, or duck rillettes on toast.
