Description
Meadowbank Chardonnay is a barrel-fermented Chardonnay from thirty-year-old vines in Tasmania's Derwent Valley.
Loose sand and sandstone over dark brown coffee rock, the latter rich in iron oxides: that is the ground these Chardonnay vines have occupied for three decades, and it is why the wines have a rocky quality in the mouth. Fruit was hand-picked and pressed as whole clusters straight into eight French barriques, only one of them new. Partial malolactic fermentation followed, then nine months on lees in barrel, and the wine was bottled without fining or filtration. Nothing here is designed to draw attention to itself; the site is left to speak.
White peach, grapefruit and a chalky, saline finish, with oak barely registering and acidity doing the structural work. Serve at 12 degrees with grilled flathead, roast chicken, or a bowl of mussels in cider. There is enough grip for something buttery too.
