Meadowbank Nouveau Syrah Pinot 2019

Meadowbank Nouveau Syrah Pinot is a light Tasmanian red born of a difficult season.

This bottling exists because of Tasmania's devastating 2019 bushfires, which upended plans across the state and forced a rethink of what could be made. Estate-grown vines planted in 1987 and 2015 supplied the fruit, and the parcels were fermented separately: half went through carbonic maceration for seven days, was then destemmed and given two more days on skins, while the other half fermented as whole berries, wild, for ten days. Four months in old French casks followed, and everything was then racked, blended and put into bottle with no fining, no filtration and a minimal sulphur addition. A wine improvised out of necessity.

Bright, light and thirst-slaking, with red cherry, pepper and a smoky savoury note. The tannins are soft. Serve it cool, around 13 degrees, with a charcuterie board, roast vegetables, or a burger straight off the grill.
