Meadowbank Nouveau Syrah Pinot 2020

Meadowbank Nouveau Syrah Pinot is a Syrah-led blend with a splash of old-vine Pinot Noir.

The Nouveau is a legacy of the 2019 bushfires, when no single-vineyard Pinot was bottled and the fruit that could be salvaged went into a juicy blend instead. The 2020 keeps the idea going: Syrah from the Top Woolshed vineyard with 10 per cent old-vine Pinot Noir. Peter Dredge picked the Syrah early for freshness and destemmed it in full, while the Pinot was partly fermented as whole bunches to bring fruit lift, soften the grip and add floral aromas. With a portion of carbonic in the mix, the wine spent only ten days on skins before nine months in old French oak.

Vivid and peppery, all red cherry and violets with a sappy freshness and tannin you barely notice. Best cool, 13 to 14 degrees, with roast chicken, a mushroom pizza, or cold cuts and cornichons. It is a wine for lunch.
