Meadowbank Pinot Noir 2022

Meadowbank Pinot Noir is a supple, perfumed Tasmanian Pinot from a single old parcel.

Two even picks across a fortnight shaped the 2022. The earlier lot was destemmed completely, while the later fruit had riper stems and so went in with 50 per cent whole bunches, the kind of call that depends on tasting stalks and not on counting numbers. The vines date to Gerald Ellis's 1987 planting, thought to combine MV6 and D5V12. Once ferment finished, pressing took the wine into old and new French barriques, 15 per cent of them new, for nine months before bottling without filtration. Quantities from this vineyard are never large.

Immediately seductive: pretty Pinot fruit, floral perfume and a pinch of spice over silky texture, fine-grained tannin and refreshing acid. The finish is peppered and long. Serve at 15 degrees with duck breast, salmon, or a mushroom risotto.
