Meadowbank Pinot Noir 2023

Meadowbank Pinot Noir is a lithe, detailed Derwent Valley Pinot blending old vines with a younger hillside block.

Most of the fruit comes from a north-facing parcel Gerald Ellis planted in 1987, likely MV6 and D5V12. For two vintages now, roughly 20 per cent has come from the Top Woolshed block, planted in 2014 on a higher outcrop where the soils carry more volcanic influence than the sand, sandstone and dark coffee rock below. That fruit brings savoury graphite undertones and grunt to the back palate, and Peter Dredge is certain the soil type is doing the work. Picking spread over two weeks and the batches were fermented apart, the early pick destemmed and the later one with half whole bunches, before nine months in oak with about 10 per cent new.

Lacy berry purity and floral perfume lead into a layered palate of red fruits, sweet earth and fine graphite tannin. There is depth here, delivered with elegance. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with duck, veal, or roast beetroot and goat's cheese.
