Description
Meadowbank Pinot Noir is a perfumed Tasmanian Pinot Noir matured nine months in French oak.
Rain was almost absent in 2024, though temperatures stayed moderate, and after several lean years the crop came back to normal size with quality intact. The fruit grows on a north-facing parcel put in during 1987 by Gerald Ellis, thought by winemaker Peter Dredge to combine MV6 and D5V12, where the slopes run over loose sand and sandstone above dark brown coffee rock: sand bound up with iron oxides and organic matter, with good exposure and airflow. Hand-picking took two weeks. The wine fermented on skins for a fortnight, was pressed to finish in a mix of old and new French barriques, and matured nine months with only 10 per cent new oak before bottling unfined.
Intensely fragrant spiced red fruit, a little undergrowth earthiness and sappy, cherry-edged freshness. This is not a powerhouse; the site does not make those. Serve at 15 degrees with duck, roast quail, or mushrooms and soft polenta.
