Meadowbank Riesling 2021

Meadowbank Riesling is a dry Tasmanian Riesling split between stainless steel and old oak.

Riesling here grows across two sites, the older planted in 1974 and the second in 2005, mostly Geisenheim 198 clone, on sandy north-facing slopes. Fruit was hand-picked, whole-cluster pressed, then fermented naturally in two halves, one in stainless steel for freshness and the other wild in old French barriques for texture. Both parcels spent three months on lees before blending and bottling without fining. Peter Dredge found 2021 an interesting year, with very light yields but excellent flavour intensity, the sort of trade the Derwent Valley makes fairly often.

Spine-tingling is the word: lime, green apple and wet slate over acidity that runs hard and clean, with a little barrel-derived breadth in the middle. Serve at 10 degrees with oysters, a Thai salad, or salt-and-pepper squid.
