Meadowbank Riesling 2022

Meadowbank Riesling is a textural Derwent Valley Riesling with a touch of residual sugar.

Three plantings feed this wine: 1974, which predates the estate and whose clone nobody knows, then 2005 and 2015. The 2005 block makes up 65 per cent of the blend and is Geisenheim 198, a clone prone to botrytis, and Peter Dredge lets that run in dry years, arguing as the Germans do that a little clean botrytis adds intensity and weight. All blocks were handpicked. The 2005 fruit fermented in stainless steel, handled oxidatively, stopped at four grams per litre of residual sugar, while the other plantings fermented dry in old oak. Both matured on lees before blending and bottling without fining.

White florals, salty citrus and lime leaf open it up, then the palate arrives layered and mouth-filling, rocky and tightly packed, with mineral saltiness and racy freshness. Serve at 10 degrees with pork belly, a spicy larb, or a plate of sashimi.
