Description
Meadowbank Riesling is an off-dry Tasmanian Riesling from three plantings on the Derwent.
Botrytis is usually a winemaker's enemy; here it is a tool. The 2005 block, Geisenheim 198 and two-thirds of the blend, is prone to it, and in dry years Peter Dredge lets a little develop for the intensity and weight it adds, German practice applied to a German clone in a cool climate. Alongside it sit plantings from 1974, older than the estate itself and of unknown clone, and from 2015. All were handpicked. The 2005 fruit fermented oxidatively in stainless steel with a touch of sugar left in, the rest in old oak barriques to round the texture, and both aged on lees before blending.
Piercing citrus, lime leaf and a honeyed thread from the botrytis, all held in check by acidity that redefines the word tart. The finish is long and saline. Serve at 10 degrees with a fragrant curry, roast pork, or blue cheese.
