Meadowbank Riesling 2024

Meadowbank Riesling is a fine, layered Riesling grown on three parcels in the Derwent Valley.

Halliday's reviewer wrote that the 2023 redefines citrus, and the 2024 sits on the same shelf. The vines are spread across plantings from 1974, 2005 and 2015, the oldest predating the estate and of unknown clone. Half the fruit fermented in stainless steel tanks, handled oxidatively, finishing with a touch of residual sugar and some clean botrytis worked in; the remainder fermented in old oak barriques to round out texture. Both parcels matured on lees before blending and bottling without fining. Peter Dredge's willingness to let botrytis run in dry seasons is central to the style.

Lime, grapefruit pith and white flowers, a whisper of honey, then acidity that scrubs the palate clean. The sweetness is barely perceptible. Ten degrees. Serve with oysters, a green papaya salad, or roast duck with something sharp alongside.
