Description
Meadowbank Syrah is a whole-bunch, naturally fermented Syrah from the Derwent Valley.
Whole bunches, all of them, went into the 2021, followed by a wild ferment, twelve days on skins, then pressing to old French oak barrels for nine months on lees before racking and bottling with no fining and only a token sulphur addition. Fruit comes partly from vines planted in 1974, the oldest on the property and the source behind the Jimmy Watson-winning Glaetzer-Dixon Mon Pere Shiraz in 2011, and partly from a newer north-facing block. The soils are the estate's usual loose sand and sandstone over iron-rich coffee rock, worked organically in practice for twenty years.
Sweet spice, red and blue fruit, earth and a lick of liquorice, with grip and drive through the middle and silken fruit underneath. Light-treading but seriously flavoured. Serve at 16 degrees with lamb shoulder, roast beetroot, or a peppercorn steak.
