Meadowbank Syrah 2022

Meadowbank Syrah is an elegant, cool-vintage Syrah grown on iron-rich sandy soils in Tasmania.

Two blocks and two ages of vine make it up: a portion from the 1974 planting, the property's oldest, and hand-picked fruit from a north-facing block put in during 2015. Both sit in loose sand and sandstone above dark brown coffee rock, and the vines are conventionally farmed on paper, though in practice the team has run these blocks organically for twenty years. The 2022 fermented naturally with 100 per cent whole berries, spent twelve days on skins, then went to old French oak for nine months on lees before racking and bottling with no fining and minimal sulphur.

Savoury and light on its feet, with a satin texture, red fruit and a peppery edge. The acid punches, and the tannins have been finely tuned by a cool season. Serve at 16 degrees with duck, lamb, or grilled field mushrooms.
